I got a call from a librarian named Cheryl at the Kapolei Public Library who is starting a new NIH program designed to teach seniors how to use the computer to get health information. Any organization willing to teach seniors can download the toolkit at http://nihseniorhealth.gov/toolkit/toolkit.html. The main purpose is to teach seniors how to find health information on the internet. It assumes the user has no experience with computers and starts off with teaching the basics of using a computer and the internet.
She said they are not getting any extra funding to provide this service. They will be offering the class every Monday for the month of November, starting next Monday from 8:30am - 10am. The room they will be using has 9 computers and a projector. 2 seniors will be able to use each terminal for a total capacity of 18 students. So far only 4 people have signed up. She needs to get more seniors (60+) to participate or they will discontinue the project. Anyone who would like to sign up may contact the Kapolei Library at 693-7050.
I hope this pilot project becomes successful so that other libraries will follow. Most libraries already have computer terminals with internet access that are available to the public for free. You can even reserve a time slot for computer use on their website (www.librarieshawaii.org).
