Here's a sampling of photos of the Quilt Show, on October 18, 2008 at the Wai'anae Library. The instructor is Betty Rezentes. I think Wai'anae Library has one of the largest collections of Quilt patterns in the state.

WSCP Meeting Notes from Oct 27

Aloha Everyone,

Attached are the meeting notes from Monday's WSCP (Waianae Sustainable Communities Plan) Public Information Meeting. Thank you to everyone who attended and shared their thoughts on the Public Review Draft. Sorry if I missed any comments in the notes - things got a little crazy! Feel free to send corrections or additions.

The major discussion of the night was the proposed light industrial area in Lualualei. We did not come to a consensus on whether or not to amend the WSCP to include this new industrial zone on the Land Use Map. Therefore, we will be putting together additional information on this potential zoning change and sending it out.

In addition, there will be a follow-up meeting in a few weeks. I will be sending the meeting information as soon as we find a time and location that works for most people. At that meeting, we will do our best to present all of the information we can on light industrial parks, along with a summary of the input we have heard and received on this topic thus far. And we will try to set up a format that enables us to hear from everyone.

FYI- On the last page of the meeting notes (page 7) is the official definition of "I-1 limited industrial district" from the City & County of Honolulu's Land Use Ordinance. There is more information available at this link:
http://www.co.honolulu.hi.us/refs/roh/21_990.pdf
Go to page 60 to see the definition along with more detailed information about what is allowed in these districts.

We will be sending the Nanakuli Neighborhood Board Resolution(s) and info soon as well.

Thank you for all of your continued participation. As always, please feel free to email or call me when any comments, concerns, or questions. My cell is 772-0316.

Thanks,
Harmonee

Please spread the word...

I got a call from a librarian named Cheryl at the Kapolei Public Library who is starting a new NIH program designed to teach seniors how to use the computer to get health information. Any organization willing to teach seniors can download the toolkit at http://nihseniorhealth.gov/toolkit/toolkit.html. The main purpose is to teach seniors how to find health information on the internet. It assumes the user has no experience with computers and starts off with teaching the basics of using a computer and the internet.

She said they are not getting any extra funding to provide this service. They will be offering the class every Monday for the month of November, starting next Monday from 8:30am - 10am. The room they will be using has 9 computers and a projector. 2 seniors will be able to use each terminal for a total capacity of 18 students. So far only 4 people have signed up. She needs to get more seniors (60+) to participate or they will discontinue the project. Anyone who would like to sign up may contact the Kapolei Library at 693-7050.

I hope this pilot project becomes successful so that other libraries will follow. Most libraries already have computer terminals with internet access that are available to the public for free. You can even reserve a time slot for computer use on their website (www.librarieshawaii.org).

Volunteers Needed to Water Native Plants Along Kaukama Rd Pathway

The Sept. 27 pathway clean up and beautification at Kaukama Road was a huge success. Over 100 volunteers gathered and planted over 40 native plants (mostly drought resistant), and thousands of native seeds. Volunteers also cleared brush and debris, and gathered over 100 bags of litter.

A watering effort is now being made, since the seedlings will need to be watered daily (ideally twice a day) until they are established. Please let us know the times and days you can help water. So far the following volunteers are watering:

Sunday: Yvonne Angut & Ohana

Monday: Laurie & Mike Lawrence

Tuesday: none

Wednesday: none

Thursday: Young/Dodge/Shimabukuro Ohana

Friday: Yvonne Angut & Ohana

Saturday: Pam Arbitrario & Ms. Soo

Details:
1. The best time to water is either morning or evening (cool times of day to avoid evaporation due to heat/sun).
2. The plants are within a 25-yard strip from the start of the trail at Kaukama Rd.
3. You'll need about 20 gallons of water -- at least half a gallon per plant (there are 40 plants).
4. You'll need a bucket or other container to carry water from plant to plant.
5. There's water (a bathroom w/showers) at the site, about 100 yards away. An alternative is to bring your own water.
6. It would take one person about one hour to water the plants -- not counting prep and commute time.

If you can help water the plants on any of these days, please contact: maileshimabukuro@yahoo.com

Mahalo to the following organizations for making the event a huge success:

Women of Waianae; AlohaCare; Teach for America; ServiceNation-Hawaii; Nani O Waianae; Kahoomiki; Campbell High Schoool; Waipahu High School; Waianae Olelo; Waianae Boys and Girls Club; Staff of Rep. Maile Shimabukuro; and all other volunteers.
