Pictured are: Student Jonathan Young, Jr. (3rd from left); Wai`anae Lions Club member Emma Ho`ohuli (4th from left); HI National Guard Captain Glen Hayase (3rd from right); and Ohio National Guard members, who volunteered at the "One Sight" program at Leihoku Elementary on 9/3/09.During the first week of September, children on the Wai`anae Coast were given the gift of sight by hard working volunteers from the HI National Guard, local eye doctors, and many other volunteers participating in the Lenscrafters/Sears "One Sight" program. One Sight organizes events aimed at providing free vision screening and glasses for children.
Here in Wai`anae, the Wai`anae Lions Club took the lead in organizing the program, and David Oclinaria of Wai`anae `Olelo was on hand to videotape the event. One Sight volunteers worked with children from several Wai`anae Coast schools.
In addition to helping the One Sight program, the HI National Guard also performed physicals for residents at some of Wai`anae's homeless shelters, participated in Wai`anae Intermediate School's "Million Word Kick-Off," and volunteered in various other capacities along the Coast.
