Hawai'i Tourism Authority Promotes Cultural Tourism
Seeks Materials from Artists and Arts Organizations to Showcase the Variety of Culture and Arts in Hawai'i

Aloha HSFCA Constituent:

In a year-round marketing effort to showcase the variety of culture and the arts that Hawai‘i has to offer, the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority (HTA) seeks materials from artists and arts organizations for the purpose of promoting cultural tourism to help attract potential visitors to our islands.

The HTA has contracted Pacific Network, a newly created Internet network and website, to be the venue that features Hawai‘i’s artists and arts organizations on the Pacific Network website's Arts & Culture Channel. Artists and arts organizations may submit brief text, jpegs, and/or videos to the HTA for formatting on Pacific Network. A description of Pacific Network’s efforts is discussed in a Letter to Artists and Friends from Edgy Lee.

By focusing on more pre-arrival exposure, potential visitors who are looking for ways to connect more closely with our culture can go to the Pacific Network website and access information about artists plus calendar listings of cultural events and activities while they are still in their decision-making process.

Pacific Network will use the submitted material for the sole purpose of promoting an artist’s material as a means of featuring Hawai‘i’s artists and its arts organizations. The HTA and Pacific Network will not use any material submitted by an artist to promote the commercial sale of goods or services. In lieu of a general release, a Limited License Agreement has been provided to clarify the proposed use of the artist’s material by Pacific Network.

Please click on the links for the Specifications Sheet and the Limited License Agreement that you will need to submit along with your materials. Send your materials and form to:

Rep. Shimabukuro Disputes Advertiser Editorial

Hale Na'au Pono: DOH has no clear transition plan in place

As a Wai'anae Coast resident and legislator, I must respond to The Advertiser's June 19 editorial, "State justified in canceling mental-health contracts."

I dispute your conclusion, but concur that "Caught in the middle are about 400 of Hale Na'au Pono's clients, who face potentially disruptive and wrenching changes as they switch to other providers."

Mental health consumers — not Hale Na'au Pono or the Department of Health — should be our main concern.

Media discussion has focused on contractual disputes between a private agency and a state department. The issue is not who is right or wrong. It is that consumers must receive the services they need, no matter who provides them.

Hale Na'au Pono has provided culturally sensitive, nationally recognized services for more than 20 years — something the health department has been unable to provide alone. My Wai'anae household's members — my sister as an educator, my mother as a nurse practitioner, and myself as a legal services attorney — have been more effective in helping many clients by collaborating with Hale Na'au Pono.

Your editorial rightly stresses the negative impact on consumers as the health department switches to other providers. Despite claims that it has staff and facilities to replace Hale Na'au Pono, the evidence is not there.

With no clear transition plan, the health department's small, new facility in Makaha, with skeleton staff and part-time hours, is no replacement for Hale Na'au Pono's full staff and adequate facilities.

The only sensible solution is to extend existing contracts until a viable alternative is found.

Rep. Maile Shimabukuro
District 45 (Wai'anae, Makaha)

Ref.To

Rep. Maile Shimabukuro's letter concerning Hale Na'au Pono on the Waianae Coast losing DOH funding for their contract to serve 400 mental health consumers.

First, let me congratulate the Representative and her husband for the birth of their first born son. I think it's indicative of the the Representative's committment to the mental health needs of her community by using her one letter for the month devoted to this urgent topic.

Second, I wish that Rep. Shimabukuro will continue to serve the Leeward Coast for another term. Her devotion to the Native Hawaiian culture and needs is remarkable. I know she and her family will be making sacrifices for the next two years to make this happen, and I hope the Legislature can help the Governor and the DOH restore the needed service contracts which should be in place until a suitable mental health care and follow-up for the 400 patients is in place.

Wai`anae Elem. Teacher Needs Your Aloha

From: Kassel Leona
Subject: Please consider making a difference in the lives of Wai`anae Elementary School's incredible students!
Date: Tuesday, July 15, 2008, 12:19 PM

Aloha Wai`anae Community Members,

I am a 5th and 6th grade math teacher at Wai`anae Elementary School. Although many of the students I work with have failed to meet state standards in the past, they have immense potential and are capable of achieving. Fortunately, I have the privilege of working with the same amazing students next year as sixth graders and will have another opportunity to help these students learn several years of material in just one.

While visiting Kapolei Middle School, I found an incredible math program that would enable me to more adequately meet the needs of each of my students. The average sixth grade classroom spans 9 years of proficiency and I will be better equipped to teach each of my students at their levels with the assistance of this program (Accelerated Math). Accelerated Math is a research-based program that has been shown to help students meet standards and develop greater proficiency of mathematical concepts. I need your help to bring this program to my classroom.

I have written an ambitious grant (url below) and individuals or businesses can donate. I am confident that there are innumerable individuals out there eager to help our local keiki and believe in the power of community members working collaboratively. Generous individuals throughout the country have already donated $654! Every bit helps, so even if you have $5 dollars to spare please consider donating!

Please help students in need by clicking on the link above! Contributions are tax-deductible, and the donors receive photographs, student thank-you notes, and a teacher letter for the project they choose to sponsor.

Remember, the future of Hawai`i depends on the condition of its children. People like you who generously support our children are working toward a brighter future.

Mahalo!

“The Boutique will also be selling electronics, such as MP3 players and IPods,” Robles added. “Prices will be below retail, with nothing over $30.”

Makaha Marketplace is also home to non profits and government agencies such as Steps for Independence, Hina Mauka, The Institute for Family Enrichment, Alaka’i Na Ke’iki, State Mental Health Clinic and the Clubhouse, all of whom service the Waianae community.

Further, Makaha Marketplace owner Lucky Cole has supported non profits such as the Hawaii Christian Coalition of Churches (HCCC) by providing storage space for supplies for HCCC's long anticipated transitional and low income housing project, Kahikolu Ohana Hale O Wai`anae. Cole also opens his doors to community groups such as the Makaha Ahupua`a and Makaha Hawaiian Civic Club, both of whom hold meetings at the Marketplace.

"Makaha Marketplace holds great hope for the future of entrepeneurialism on the Waianae Coast," Shimabukuro said. "The Marketplace, combined with other exciting developments, like the new Farmer's Market that's held twice a month at Makaha Resort, are making excellent progress toward "buying local" and our community’s self-sustainability."

Makaha Fashion Boutique is located at the Makaha Marketplace (87-1170 Farrington Hwy.), and is open Mon-Sat. from 10am-6pm. For more information, call 589-7315.

Wai`anae Students Interning at HECO

Excerpts from Honolulu Advertiser story by Janeen Loose, Monday, June 30, 2008:

Four students from the Leeward community are gaining hands-on experience in the electric utility industry through summer internships at Hawaiian Electric Company. Mentored by experienced Hawaiian Electric employees, the students are working in a variety of areas including safety and security, power line maintenance, and support services.

Mikey Phomtavong and Rome Werner, both seniors at Waianae High & Intermediate School, were partnered with Journeyman Lineman Alden Almeida of the Construction and Maintenance division at the Koolau Baseyard. The students performed tasks in support of overhead and underground line crews, learning about the science and engineering of electricity. “These two young men have a lot of varied interests and dreams for their future,” said Kanai Kauhane, Construction & Maintenance Training Supervisor. “We provided them with an inside look into the electric industry, and encouraged them to learn what aspects of the job fit their interests and talents.”
