Wai`anae Students Interning at HECO

Excerpts from Honolulu Advertiser story by Janeen Loose, Monday, June 30, 2008:

Four students from the Leeward community are gaining hands-on experience in the electric utility industry through summer internships at Hawaiian Electric Company. Mentored by experienced Hawaiian Electric employees, the students are working in a variety of areas including safety and security, power line maintenance, and support services.

Mikey Phomtavong and Rome Werner, both seniors at Waianae High & Intermediate School, were partnered with Journeyman Lineman Alden Almeida of the Construction and Maintenance division at the Koolau Baseyard. The students performed tasks in support of overhead and underground line crews, learning about the science and engineering of electricity. “These two young men have a lot of varied interests and dreams for their future,” said Kanai Kauhane, Construction & Maintenance Training Supervisor. “We provided them with an inside look into the electric industry, and encouraged them to learn what aspects of the job fit their interests and talents.”
