`Ōlelo Wai’anae Community Media Center to trial new hours of CMC operations to accommodate the Wai’anae Coast Community
WAI’ANAE, HI; Sunday, September 26, 2010—Effective the week of October 4, 2010, `Ōlelo Wai’anae Community Media Center will be open to the public five (5) days a week. The additional day (Saturdays, 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.) of operation is in response to the Community’s interest in being able to utilize `Ōlelo Wai’anae CMC services and resources on a weekend. Community use of these new trial hours will help `Ōlelo determine the best time to open for community use.
The new hours of operations is as follows:
Sundays: Closed
Mondays: 3:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Tuesdays: 3:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Wednesdays: 3:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Thursdays: 3:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Fridays: Closed
Saturdays: 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
“Staff and I are committed to better serving the Wai’anae Coast community, therefore, we are pleased to be opening on Saturdays to expand our availability to everyone in the community,” said Hanalei Y. Aipoalani, Interim Manager, `Ōlelo Wai’anae CMC. “Moreover, we are encouraged by the high level of interest for in-school partnerships-and-trainings between `Ōlelo Wai’anae CMC and schools along the Wai’anae Coast. These partnerships and trainings, coupled with services and resources available during our CMC hours of operations, are poised to increase utilization hours, training classes and certification counts. Therefore, the adjustment in hours of CMC operations represents an opportunity for staff to build capacity within the community-at-large and schools.”

Pueo Trucking, PVT Land Co., & Henry's Equipment Respond to Need for Erosion Control at Makaha Surfing Beach
Private companies, concerned community members, and government officials met at Makaha Surfing Beach on 9/16/10 to discuss plans to address the on-going erosion problem. The first priority is to save the lifeguard stand on the Kaena Point end of Makaha Surfing Beach, which is currently being supported by sandbags. After that, and annual erosion maintenance plan needs to be implemented. [Click on the photo to enlarge].
On 9/16/10, representatives from Pueo Trucking, PVT Land Co., and Henry's Equipment attended a meeting of concerned community members and government officials regarding the on-going erosion problem at Makaha Surfing Beach. The companies responded to a call from Rep. Shimabukuro asking for help with pushing sand to save the lifeguard stand and other structures which are at risk of losing their foundations due to the large winter surf.
Community members have been complaining about this problem for many years, and unfortunately, the City's limited resources are insufficient to address the problem. Chris Conger of DLNR provided a report with recommendations on how to address the erosion problem, and Dexter Liu of the City is working on obtaining approval for the private companies to start the work. Mahalo nui loa to Pueo Trucking, PVT Land Co., and Henry's Equipment for being willing to kokua with erosion at Makaha Surfing Beach; the community is extremely greatful!

State & City Urged to Allow E Ala Voyaging Canoe to Return to Wai`anae Coast

E Ala voyaging canoe captains Sam Kapoi, Kaina Holomalia, and Waimea McKeague are all young men from the Wai`anae Coast.
PROPOSAL TO USE WAI`ANAE BOAT HARBOR OR POKA`I BAY FOR E ALA VOYAGING CANOE DRY DOCK
WHO: Polynesian Voyaging Society (PVS), Wai`anae Hawaiian Civic Club (WHCC), and many other individuals are making this request (See spreadsheet listing E Ala supporters and volunteers in Appendix 1). Makaha Studios is preparing a video with further information regarding this proposal.
WHAT: PVS, WHCC, and others urge the state and city to allow the use of Wai`anae Boat Harbor and/or Poka`i Bay as a location to permanently dry dock the E Ala voyaging canoe. The canoe would be stored under an energy efficient A-frame structure modeled after a halau wa`a in Laie (See model drawing of the “Halau Wa`a `O E Ala” in Appendix 2). The E Ala halau wa`a would feature photo-voltaic solar panels which would provide power for lighting and outlets. A fence, locks, and other security measures would also be constructed to prevent theft, vandalism, vagrancy, and other potential problems.
WHERE: Specifically, the fenced-off area between Wai`anae Boat Harbor and Wai`anae High School; or the old canoe storage area near the Kuilioloa Heiau. Either would be ideal locations for the E Ala halau wa`a.
WHY: The E Ala needs to be returned home to the Wai`anae Coast to fulfill its purpose, which is to train residents to sail using ancient Hawaiian navigation techniques. As background, the E Ala is currently docked at the Sand Island Maritime Education Training Center (METC). It was constructed on the Wai`anae Coast in 1981 under the leadership of WHCC. At the time, Wai`anae and Nanakuli High School had programs that used the canoe to train students to sail, and the canoe was docked at Wai`anae boat harbor. Unfortunately, funding, liability, and other concerns eventually ended the school-based programs, and the canoe was vandalized while at the boat harbor. This lead to the E Ala being moved to METC, where it has been ever since. Nevertheless, the enthusiasm for E Ala never ended, and PVS has continued to train Wai`anae Coast students to sail and maintain the E Ala (See E Ala background from WHCC website in Appendix 3).
HOW: A dedicated group of volunteers is willing to provide in-kind services to construct and maintain the halau wa`a, fence, and other necessary security measures (See spreadsheet listing E Ala supporters and volunteers in Appendix 1). A federal grant and state legislative measures are being submitted to provide supplemental funding for the E Ala halau wa`a. In February 2010, City employee Edward Freitas stated that from a maintenance perspective, he would not object to allowing the E Ala to be docked at Poka`i Bay. Wai`anae Harbormaster William Aila, Jr. has also expressed his support for bringing the E Ala back to the Wai`anae Boat Harbor.
Furthermore, as stated above, the push to return E Ala to the Wai`anae Coast has been on-going for many years; the key missing elements were captains, crew members, and a location. PVS has trained 3 captains (Sam Kapoi, Kaina Holomalia, and Waimea McKeague), and several crews, who are all young Wai`anae Coast residents. These captains and crews sailed the E Ala, along with two other canoes, Hokule`a and Kamauheheu, back to the Wai`anae Coast from April 20-May 1, 2010 (See media coverage of the Wai`anae Coast sail in Appendix 4). The greater community has also expressed its support, as over 500 people have signed petitions urging the State and City to provide the permission necessary to allow the E Ala to be docked at Wai`anae Boat Harbor or Poka`i Bay (See E Ala Petitions in Appendix 5).
WHEN: PVS, WHCC, and other supporters urge the State and City to allow E Ala to be docked at Wai`anae Boat Harbor or Poka`i Bay immediately, or as soon as possible.

Due to the lack of poll workers, several polling places have closed for this upcoming 2010 election. House District 45 polling places for the 9/18/10 Primary Election and 11/2/10 General Election are: Waianae Intermediate School and Makaha Elementary School. Waianae Elementary and Kamaile Elementary will not be serving as polling places in 2010.

Attention All Non-Profits: IRS Form Due Oct 15th!
In 2006, Congress passed the Pension Protection Act. This law mandated that all tax-exempt organizations, except churches and church-related groups, file annual information returns with the IRS beginning in 2007. This was a new requirement for many small organizations. The consequences for failure to file are dire-any organization that does not file an information return for three consecutive years automatically loses its tax exemption.
Despite the Service's outreach efforts to date, many small organizations still appear to be unaware of the tax law change as they haven't filed. Small tax-exempt organizations do great work in their communities. The IRS believes it's important to give these organizations an opportunity to preserve their valuable tax exemption and is offering a one-time relief program to bring these small organizations back into compliance.
The smallest organizations, eligible to file a 990-N, can go to the IRS Web site and electronically file the ePostcard. It asks for only eight information items. Small tax-exempt organizations eligible to file Form 990-N (e-Postcard) or Form 990-EZ have until October 15, 2010 to file.
Larger organizations should file their delinquent returns for the 3 years (2007, 2008 and 2009) and pay the compliance fee by October 15, 2010.

Free Food Vouchers for People over 60 to use at the Waianae Farmers Market

Over 100 seniors showed up at the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center (WCCHC) on Thursday, August 19 to register for the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP).
The SFMNP is a program that offers $50 worth of vouchers to low-income seniors (over the age of 60 or over the age of 55 if deemed handicapped) that can be redeemed for eligible foods like fresh fruits, vegetables, honey and cut herbs. These vouchers can be used at participating farmers’ markets around the island, including the Waianae Farmers’ Market.
“The program is designed to provide fresh and nutritious locally grown produce to low-income seniors and support local farmers, farmers’ markets, and community supported agriculture programs,” said Roxanne Stark, Director of Agency Affiliations for the Hawaii Foodbank.
The Hawaii Foodbank is working with the State of Hawaii and USDA to certify nearly 5000 seniors. There are only 2000 vouchers left until the program ends in October. Distributing the remaining vouchers will increase the possibility of bringing this program back next year.
The Hawaii Foodbank urges seniors who are at or below 185% of the federal poverty guideline to register for the program. The organization has several sites around the island scheduled to register new participants.
“The program is such a great benefit to seniors and there is still interest in the program for those who were unable to make it,” said Desiree Hikuroa, Director of Communications at WCCHC.

“The program is designed to provide fresh and nutritious locally grown produce to low-income seniors and support local farmers, farmers’ markets, and community supported agriculture programs,” said Roxanne Stark, Director of Agency Affiliations for the Hawaii Foodbank.
The Hawaii Foodbank is working with the State of Hawaii and USDA to certify nearly 5000 seniors. There are only 2000 vouchers left until the program ends in October. Distributing the remaining vouchers will increase the possibility of bringing this program back next year.
The Hawaii Foodbank urges seniors who are at or below 185% of the federal poverty guideline to register for the program. The organization has several sites around the island scheduled to register new participants.
“The program is such a great benefit to seniors and there is still interest in the program for those who were unable to make it,” said Desiree Hikuroa, Director of Communications at WCCHC.

Baseyard Hawaii, located at Sand Island, is part of the Nanakuli Housing Corporation.
Baseyard Hawaii collects and distributes reusable, surplus construction materials to families, schools and nonprofit organizations at little or no cost. Excess materials are made available to the public at a discount and proceeds used to fund NHC’s programs. Donors are able to save the cost of disposing of reusable materials to our overextended landfills. Since its inception, over 1200 tons of materials have been saved from the landfill. In 2008, NHC was awarded EPA recognition for its recycling work.

Directions to Baseyard Sand Island
* Turn on Sand Island Access Road.
* Pass the old Kilgos, Malolo and First Hawaiian Bank on the right.
* Go through the first intersection (Auiki St.) and make the next right turn after the McKesson Building (large cement building at the Auiki St. intersection). You will see our Nanakuli Housing Corporation sign and a La Mariana Resturant sign.
* Follow the road. You will pass the La Mariana Resturant and then the road bends and you will then be on the back side of Ameron Cement. You will notice a fork in the road. Take the left side of the fork and you will see Honolulu Recovery Systems ahead. Pass them and we are on the right side of the road next to all the large cement blocks.
