Kamaile Academy Strengthens Families

NEWS RELEASE: KAMAILE ACADEMY STRENGTHENS FAMILIES
THROUGH EMBRACING THE HAWAIIAN CULTURE

WAI‘ ANAE , HI (10/3/08)—During the week of October 6 – 10, Kamaile Academy will be hosting an ‘Ohana Intersession: Ma Ka Hana Ka‘ike, to share the spirit of aloha through learning experiences that will build lifelong relationships and a strong path for success for our children. This intersession will include Hawaiian Enrichment opportunities and a culminating tour of Makua Valley with two local archaeologists and mo‘olelo from the original evicted families of the valley.

Families will also be offered the opportunity to learn a hula where each step tells a wonderful story about the beautiful Hawaiian culture. A family literacy program supported by the Native Hawaiian Library, Alu Like, YMCA, Pacific American Foundation and Kawaiaha‘o Church will provide parents with the opportunity to read with their children and Kamaile Academy will present mini-classes in parenting, computers, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).

Kamaile Academy is a Hawai‘i public charter school on the Leeward coast of O ‘ahu. It is the mission of the Kamaile Elementary community to offer every student a personal, responsive and rigorous education and that every Kamaile Elementary student will know the pride of accomplishment, the heart of connection and the meaning of 'ohana.

Natalie Attar - Teach for America Success Story

Teach for America Success Story - Natalie Attar of Waianae Elementary School

Natalie Attar (Hawai'i Corps '06)
Undergraduate University: University of Arizona
Major: Nutrition

Natalie Attar teaches third grade math at Waianae Elementary in the Leeward Complex Area. Natalie collaborated with Courtney Owen (Corps ’06) to design an ambitious new curriculum map for her school, focusing on new assessments, lessons, and long-term plans that were both rigorous and in line with state standards. Her hard work and relentless dedication to her students paid off. At the beginning of the year, only 12 percent of Natalie’s students scored at a basic level or above on the Hawai‘i Quarterly Assessment, but by the end of the year, 100 percent of her students scored at the basic level or higher, with 93 percent of her students demonstrating proficient or advanced work. The success in Natalie’s classroom is representative of the impact that our movement is having in schools across Hawai’i.

Revised Waianae SCP Public Review Draft

Subject: Revised Waianae SCP Public Review Draft

Aloha All-

The Waianae Sustainable Communities Plan (Revised 2009) Public Review Draft is ready and can be downloaded from this link:
http://townscapeinc.com/waianae-scp.asp
(It is a large document, so it takes a while.)

We have just sent the document to the printer, so a hard copy will hopefully be in the mail to those of you who so requested by Friday afternoon. (please send me your address if you haven't already)

This marks the beginning of a 45-day review period. You can comment on the draft via email, phone, or at the upcoming Public Info Meeting. We are aiming to hold that mtg the last week of October, but the date has not yet been confirmed.

We will also be giving a brief presentation of the major changes to the WSCP to the Nanakuli Neighborhood Board in October. (Waianae NB not until December due to scheduling conflicts and their board's November recess).

Thank you to all of you who sent in comments on the Preliminary Draft, and to those who participated in the last PAC meeting in September. We tried our best to incorporate your input throughout the Plan. (the notes from that last mtg have been revised and attached here for your reference)

One issue that has not yet been decided upon is the proposed change to the Land Use Map in the Appendix. The basic issue is whether or not to include a new "Industrial" area in Lualualei. This Public Review Draft includes 2 versions of that map: Land Use Map A is the same as the original. Land Use Map B includes an additional "Industrial" area in Lualualei. We hope to discuss this with all of you at the meeting at the end of the month, and come to a consensus on which map to include in the Final WSCP.

please call with any questions or comments (best way to reach me is on my cell: 772-0316),

Also, I updated the website:
If you go to this site, there is now a link for the Public Review Draft in its final form, and below that is a link to the Public Review Draft with tracked changes and no maps. (this is for those of you who would like to see the changes more clearly).
Also, attached is a memo that summarizes the major changes.
