Aloha e kakou,

As some of you may know, I am the president of the "newly" formed O`ahu Land Trust. We are slowly introducing our organization and directors to those who care and work for the environment. On Tuesday, September 2, 2008, we are co-hosting along with TPL (Trust for Public Lands) and NCSLT (North Shore Community Land Trust) the Green Drinks function at E&O Trading Company in Ward Center.

If you have a chance, please stop on by to talk to some of our board members who, along with me, are committed to protect and perpetuate O`ahu's natural and cultural heritage by actively working with communities to acquire and conserve land. As this organization is rolling out, we have been faced with excitingly challenges, funding to start staffing our organization before the end of year, receiving numerous recommendations for lands to be looked at that may be a part of our program, and hopefully a commitment before the end of the year to start the acquisition process for at least one parcel on the island of O`ahu.

Please join us in this exciting start to what we hope will be an important part of our conservation and environmental communities in Hawai`i.

Subject: Pvt Ja Van Yiu Lin

Hi Maile,

Just an update on my son's situation. Today was the deadline for the commanders at Ft Sill to respond to the letter that his attorney submitted, but none received. We are planning to fly out to Oklahoma on Sept. 1, 2008, but we need help from everyone. This is the website address that one of his supporters put together: support4javanlin.wordpress.com. Please help us get my son's story out to whomever will listen. Our family will forever be grateful, for anyone that can help.

Mahalo,
Lisa Moniz & Family

COMMENT: Here's an excerpt, describing the problem, from the Friends for Ja Van Yiu Lin website:

Ja Van Yiu Lin is a 2008 Wai'anae High School graduate who joined the National Guard believing that he would be serving his country. In July 2008, at basic training in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, a drill instructor recklessly threw a metal bed frame that struck Ja Van in the head, giving him a concussion and causing him to lose partial vision and hearing. Ja Van's military leaders targeted him for retaliation and have isolated him from his family because he shared his story with his family and the public. Ja Van needs medical care and wants to get out of the military. His family and friends are very concerned about his health and safety and are mounting an effort to get Ja Van home safely. This website was created to provide information about Ja Van's situation and to raise funds to pursue justice for Ja Van. Please help Ja Van to come home safely and win justice for his injuries. Mahalo.

Wai’anae, HI. MA'O Organic Farms announced today that they will be hosting their fourth annual MA’O MA TOWN fundraiser on September 20, 2008 from 6-9 p.m..

MA’O Organic Farms hopes to raise scholarship funds for 26 Wai’anae youth pursuing their Associate of Arts Degrees at Leeward Community College (LCC). In a community where only 11% of high school graduates make it to two-year universities, these youth all have big dreams and a driving desire to make a difference.

“I want to study environmental science and politics so I can come back and help my community,” explained student intern, Kiane Aila. Her peers have equally strong sentiments.

“Everyone says that we in Wai’anae can’t do anything positive, but we can and we will,” Jonathan Abell said further.

The Legislature appropriated annual funding of $75,000 per year for MA’O’s college program around 2006. However, this is not enough to cover LCC tuition costs, mentorship, cultural grounding, and student salaries.

"This year, MA’O is faced with an unprecedented amount of youth asking for entry into the college program, and there is not enough grant funding to meet that demand," said Rep. Maile Shimabukuro (D-45th – Waianae, Makaha, Makua).

“MA'O is the future of Hawai'i agriculture — to connect people to the food they eat and the people they eat with. They are growing our next generation of growers," said Chef Ed Kenney. Previous events hosted at TOWN and DOWNTOWN restaurants have generated over $50,000, and helped to send 20 youth to school; most will be first-generation college graduates.

"The farm provides an opportunity for youth to participate in leadership-development internships that include entrepreneurial, agricultural and educational experiences," Rep. Shimabukuro added. "And MA'O is Oahu’s largest producer of organic fruits and vegetables, participating in farmer's markets across the state, and supplying restaurants such as Kona Brewing Co., Town and Downtown Restaurants, and Alan Wong's."

QUEST/Medicaid Updates

1. QUEST Spenddown has been repealed. This program allowed people who had excess income to spenddown their monthly income on medical bills to a specified amount to become eligible for QUEST. This program has been repealed.

2. QUEST ACE offers some coverage for people who are up to 200% of the federal poverty line. Here is a link to the flyer: http://www.med-quest.us/PDFs/Pamphlet%20Forms/DHS%201141.pdf

3. QUEST Expanded is replacing Medicaid Fee-for-Service. QUEST Expanded is a HMO. People currently with Medicaid Fee-for-Service will get enrollment packets during the last week of September. By October 1, 2008, they will need to choose plans. Starting February 1, 2009, they will start receiving services through the health plans.

4. Keiki Care is a health plan that is available for children, who do not qualify for QUEST or Medicaid. I have attached a quick chart comparison [click here] for your information.

Other things:

1. Hawaii Covering Kids helps children get medical insurance. They have flyers in all types of languages (about 20!) giving general information about medical insurance for children. It can be found at www.coveringkids.com/news/Section_155.asp.

2. Hawaii Covering Kids also gave me this quick chart regarding income limits for QUEST, WIC, Head Start, and free/reduced school lunches. I am attaching it [click here] to this email.

Hope you find these helpful.

Wai`anae Loses Friend of Environment - Katy Kok

Aloha Maile,

Am sad to report the very unexpected and untimely death of Katy Kok. She passed away suddenly in her home on Tuesday [8/19/08].
Her sister, Lori Gossard, is staying at Katy's home and is currently arranging a memorial service. She's looking at sometime in the first full week of September at one of the beach parks. She has promised to let me know so I can try to get the word out via Westside Stories and/or e-mail.
* Per Hans Kok on 9/25 11 am, the family will not put ANYTHING into our newspaper.

Without a doubt, Nani O Waianae and the greater Wai'anae Coast community has lost a great advocate, leader, and friend to the environment

Please share this info with all your contacts and keep Katy's family in your thoughts and prayers through this difficult time.

Mahalo!

Hale Na`au Pono - Closing, Employees Leaving

Tuesday, August 19, 2008

Media Release

WAI`ANAE’S COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH CENTER
DECREASES SERVICES & RELEASES EMPLOYEES

Hale Na`au Pono, Wai`anae’s community operated mental health center, has ended much of its services to the adult seriously mentally ill patients in the face of the State’s recent action to end one of its major contract with the organization. Over 300 patients living in Wai`anae, have been directed by the Department of Health, to seek services from a multitude of organizations and State operated community mental health centers located in various parts of O`ahu. Management of consumer funds will be done by Helping Hands, located in Honolulu.

The only reason for the State’s determination to have Hale Na`au Pono stop its services is for the “necessity and convenience of the State.” Hale Na`au Pono is the only non-State operated community mental health center. It is also the only center to be nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for the multitude of services it provides under State Department of Health contracts.

In light of this decrease in service, Hale Na`au Pono will have released 38 employees over period of 60 days, some remaining unemployed, returning to school, or obtaining employment in other fields or in related fields. Hale Na`au Pono will maintain a work/volunteer force of approximately 100 employees.

The organization will continue to provide an extensive array of services in the general area of behavioral health, maintaining an active Children and Adolescent program of therapeutic foster homes, school support, and group homes respite service. It provides services for the Developmentally Disabled/Mentally Retarded person regardless of age. The Wai`anae Neighborhood Place located out of the old Chinese School in Wai`anae will continue to operate and coordinate social services, especially for families struggling to keep out or get out of CPS jurisdiction, homelessness, etc.

Hale Na`au Pono will continue to operate an ACT team till the end of August before shutting this service and dispersing through the community 37 more consumers due to Department of Health action. What will remain in the Adult Services will be a housing program of 72 beds for the seriously mentally ill, in an effort to address the homeless issue in the community.

Hui Hana Pono, a Clubhouse program, in which members are able to socialize, and join in a stream of work-involvement will remain in operation, taking in an average of 25 individuals a day. Ho`okaulike, a Drug and Alcohol Treatment program will also continue to operate through its facility in Ma`ili.
“This is a sad day in the life of this organization,” said Pōkā Laenui, Executive Director, as he addressed the adult staff in a going away luncheon. “But rest assured that the leadership in this community will continue to fight for the principle that community services are best provided when run by people from their community,” he said.

AARP Meetings in Wai`anae

From: Rodlyn rodlynb@juno.com

The AARP meets the first Friday of every month at the Beach Club at the R & R Camp. We start gathering at 10AM and the meeting starts promptly at 10:30AM and ends at 12 noon. We most often have a speaker on an issue of interest. Lunch is available for $7.00 per person after the meeting.

We would love to extend an invitation to everyone on the Wai`anae Coast, but especially to our community members 50+. They could probably find things they need from us, but we certainly need them and welcome them and their ideas.

Mahalo & Aloha,
Rodlyn
